Florida - 1562 - JEAN RIBAULT SELECTS SITE FOR NEW COLONY
On April 30 Admiral Jean Ribault entered the St. Johns River searching for a suitable site to place a Hugenot colony. Two years later construction began. The colony, named Fort Caroline, consisted of a triangular fort of earth and timbers and was eventually to become the scene of confrontation between the Spanish and the French.
